Interesting comment a few down from here, I also was referred to Kathryn by reputation as the best mediator in the city. Reality was very different. My mediation in Dec with my ex-wife ended with an impasse because we were far apart in terms of dollar numbers. At that point Ms. d'Artois told me "not to be afraid of arbitration" and that "I shouldn't feel pressure to cave". Of course she informed me of the risks. Turns out I should have been much more afraid of arbitration. After an expensive legal process and all the hassle of it, I did much worse at arbitration then what my ex-wife was offering during mediation. Clearly what she was offering was reasonable from a legal perspective (lets not get started on fair or anything silly like that) and, given what had happened moving me towards her position in mediation would have been very, very smart for me. I consider that a serious failure on her part as the mediator. Very disappointed and a very expensive (for me) misjudgement.

I am a practicing divorce lawyer in the City of Ottawa with over 30 years of litigation experience. My colleagues in the practice of law are of a similar vintage and experience. Kathryn d'Artois is considered to be, without question, the best mediator in the City of Ottawa by those people who actually know what they are talking about. It is shameful that you actually post whining comments from people who clearly do not know that of which they speak.

I routinely refer as many of my clients as possible to Kathryn for mediation. She understands the importance of proper financial disclosure and her drafting skills are excellent. I constantly receive positive feedback from clients that I refer to her, both male and female. She comes highly recommended and I wouldn't hesitate to refer any dispute to her.

I used Kathryn this past year for mediation and it was the best decision of my life. I was referred by a friend and I was very impressed. She was very equal and understanding. Although she was patient, she also managed to save us a lot of time and money - an honest quality that not a lot of business people possess. I would refer Kathryn to anyone who needed a mediator for her honesty, positivity, work ethic, fairness and beautiful personality.

Generally I was not happy with Kathryn's services. The initial interview went well but then during mediation she contradicted herself on several key points which she subsequently refused to clarify. She also didn't listen very well or seem to be able to accurately recall the points she helped to negotiate. She made many substantive mistakes on the draft agreement - errors that my ex and I concurred were a complete misrepresentation of the agreements we had reached in mediation. However, she corrected those mistakes without hesitation.

I found Ms D'artois to be extremely knowledgeable, courteous, professional, fair and creative to find solutions that worked for both sides. I don't understand the previous posts about bias, I would have to say absolutely not at all. Retain her to mediate your dispute with confidence

Terrible. Found that Kathryn was very biased toward women. Could not believe how she would ignore and twist hard numbers, events and facts so they favoured the women. For her 2 + 2 = 5 whenever she is in the mood. Talks a great game but can not analyse or understand the info given to her. Not thorough;making decisions without even asking if she has all the data to justify a decision. Seems to use her emotions to determine what to do.

d'Artois was recommended by a friend and she was terrible! I explained all of my assets and she would then include them on my ex-wifes side. I would have to explain again and again that this property did not belong to my ex but after every meeting she would include my pre and post marriage assests on my wifes side. She is VERY biased against men! Do yourself a favour, do not use her services. Instead, go directly to a divorce lawyer. It will be cheaper in the long run.

I do not feel she got it right. She counted all my assets, while my wife's were treated very lightly eg. her government pension - I agreed not to have pension evaluation to save my ex. wife $500 - result $60-70k of my wife's money was not included. It was not fair, she new more less how much it is. She was fine with my wife's claims about additional cost for her to buy a house, while it turned out that I staying in old house had to cover the same costs as buying the new house. Not fair. But this was the cost of trusting in her professional ethics. She was recommended to my wife by her female friend, it looks like other posters are right about tendency to work for woman during mediation. Sad.

We negotiated a separation agreement but because we were living under the same roof, we would go to the matrimonial house and argue over things discussed/determined through mediation. We were doing fine until my former spouse talked with Kathyrn D'Artois offline and Kathryn told my former spouse that I probably wouldn't sign the agreement...which spawned an entirely new scheme from my former spouse...she had her mother move in, and 3 weeks later she and her mother ran off with the children...we've been fighting in court for 2 years now...Had Ms. D'Artois been more professional I beleive we could have finalized the separation agreement, instead she voiced a personal opinion that was completely inappropriate.

I used kathryn d'Artois as a mediator. I was going through a very rough period in my life and deciding to work with her was one of the best choices I have made in the past few years. She was very fair and very knowledgeable about the law concerning the issues me and my wife had to deal with. I highly recommend her as a mediator and I believe that she has all of the right skills to do this job.

This is possibly the worst i have had. And i was had. I thought a lawyer was there to look out for their clients? I was emotionaly messed up during the seperation. . What does this lawyer do. Gives everything to my ex on a silver platter. I end up withmy kids, 9.5 hours a week to see my kids. I only realized this a couple years later. And now i am screwed, my ex can make variations of the agreement at will, it would seem. This Lawyer is biased against men or she is incompetant. I did find out 2 years later that dartois had recently gone thru a divorce. She took it out on me and not her former husband. And the upper canada law society would not do anything about it. Talk about protecting their own.

I used Ms D'Artois as a mediator for a high conflict custody case. In the preliminary interview I felt confident that she understood my situation and was knowledgable. In mediation everything turned around. I felt betrayed. What is the point of the Children's Lawyer if what the child says is not considered. It was costly and a total waste of money. Court would have been cheaper and probably more fair.
