August McCarthy is a con artist and currently under investigation by the Virginia State Bar for engaging in fraud. On 11/6/17 the Fairfax County Circuit Court imposed almost $81,000 in punitive sanctions against McCarthy for filing a frivolous lawsuit, simply to harass people, and doing so under an alias to avoid detection. McCarthy hijacked the name of his former employer's law firm and filed the lawsuit under that name. He had been summarily asked to resign after the firm's partners discovered he had engaged in self-dealing and other dishonest misconduct. The Virginia State Bar is currently investigating McCarthy's use of a fake name in order to anonymously file a lawsuit. It is not the first time he has done so. In the most recent case, the judge, himself, initiated the complaint with the VA State Bar. McCarthy is not who he appears to be. He is a fraudster and a con artist. Be careful before parting with your $$$. Find an honest, ethical, and competent attorney.

When I encounter a person of Mr. McCarthy's expertise, character and work ethic, I am compelled to write this review. This lawyer is everything but what many unfounded stereotypes profess some lawyers to be. I am a senior citizen and over the course of many years I have had my share of interactions with the legal profession. Never have I had such a positive experience in every way than I have had with Mr. McCarthy. His knowlege of the law and especially his ability to cite previous cases for my benefit were remarkable. He seems to remember everything and he is superb in the courtroom. In each of my several court appearances it was obvious that I had the superior lawyer. And we won each time. Aside from great results (that were not anticipated!), his compassion and his spiritual nature have clearly shone through. I am an excellent judge of character. You can trust Mr. McCarthy without hesitation. He has a true passion for doing the right thing for his clients and everyone else.

Last month, a Fairfax jury entered a verdict against August McCarthy, and as a result the court entered a judgment against him for more than $50,000! He breached a contract and made all kinds of lame excuses as to why he shouldn't have to pay. Either he doesn't understand basic contract law, or he's just a deadbeat who doesn't pay his bills. Either way, high chance you will lose out if you give him your money. Looks like some other ratings on this site have identified similar concerns about him and his lack of legal skills

Great lawyer! I was looking for the address of Mr McCarthy when I cam upon this site and decided that I have to comment on what I'm reading. I've used Mr McCarthy on several occasions on very important issues and was 100% satisfied and honestly surprised with the great results. I'm not a lawyer but the comment that said they had received a life sentence for a civil case sounds ridiculous to me. The other person saying that Mr McCarthy gave him his money back and is complaining...give me a break! I don't normally like lawyers and don't like to pay them but if I find myself in a pinch again I will most definitely call Mr McCarthy. I know it's easy to take unanswered cheap shots online but honestly grow up.

Do not hire this attorney. He is bad news. We used him in a Rappahannock County "Civil" Circuit Court family law case. He violated our Constitutional Rights, took 10 grand, and gave us a life sentence. Didn't know that could happen with a civil case. Don't learn too late like we did.

I recommend August McCarthy to anyone who is looking for a lawyer. He is very aggressive and achieves positive results. I hired him for my custody hearing and he got me more time with my children and lowered my child support.

First impression was that he was professional, knowledgeable and pragmatic. He gave common sense advice for my situation which is exactly what I was looking for. That is where the good news ends. I hired August to file a shared custody agreement which he NEVER filed. Over the course of at least 3 months he never communicated to me that there would be a delay in filing the paperwork. In fact, he rarely responded to any of my communications. This caused my case to be delayed by 2-3 months. Sadly, the only time he did respond to my e-mail quickly is when I requested a refund. I'm sure the only reason he responded promptly is because he knew that he was going to be sued. I was actually disappointed that he refunded my money because I really wanted to sue him!Next time I would use a lawyer that specializes in family law, as opposed to a general practice lawyer. I am very suspicious of the very good reviews for August....

Mr. McCarthy handled my divorce, which I had tried to settle on my own with no success. He was attentive, professional, and ethical in all manner of business. He answers your questions, takes time to explain things to you, and does not over bill for every little thing. It was about as decent an experience anyone could have, given the circumstances. I would recommend him to anyone. You will be well taken care of if you hire him.

The statement two posts down is not true. Several lawsuits will filed against that person but they were not served. He was not sued so the firm couldn't have won. I suspect that many of the high ratings given on this site are written by friends and family.

thie site ought to be responsible and remove the complaint found at the bottom of the list. It's neither fair nor accurate. That client was subseqently sued by the firm Mr. McCarthy previously worked for regarding defamation and they won. That client is not trustworthy and his remarks should be deleted from this site.

I gave Mr. McCarthy such high marks because he handled every aspect of my case very well. He explained my case to me at the first meeting. Then he prepared me for my trial. Then he handled the trial perfectly in court. I was charged with assault, which was completely untrue. It was a small trial by some people's standards, but it meant a lot to me and he treated the case like it was important to him. I am very happy with the way he handled my case. I would hire him again in a minute.

I am grateful to have Mr. McCarthy on my side. I have hired him for several issues I've had, and he has done an excellent job each time. My son's school was trying to expel him and Mr. McCarthy stopped it. My other son was charged with a serious crime, and Mr. McCarthy handled that so my son did not go to jail. I recommend him very highly. I decided to post this because I saw the negative comment from before when I goodled him and wanted to make sure people know what a good lawyer he is.

Highly recommend. He represented us when he worked in the other firm (Fall 2006) and did excellent work for us. Now he has his own firm and it's even better. My husband and I feel lucky to have him as our family lawyer. I read some of the other comments and suspect this person is probably upset with the other firm, not Mr. McCarthy. He is a very, very good lawyer. He knows the law, he is careful, and he cares about your case. He always returns our phone calls and does not overcharge us, which is saying a lot for a lawyer! He defended us when we were sued in the circuit court for a lot of money and he worked very hard to win. We won the case and did not have to sell our house. We had a problem with the IRS and he sent us to a great lawyer for that. We recommend him to anyone who needs a smart, honest lawyer.

Mr. McCarthy was my third lawyer in my divorce case. He was great. He returned my calls and paid attention to my case, which my other 2 lawyers never did. I am very pleased and will recommend him to others. He worked very hard for me.

Pretty awful really. Talks very confident and well. Makes you feel at ease but terrible in following paperwork, follow-up calls, showing up for meetings, etc. I would definitely suggest you get someone else. Very expensive as well.

My felony case got dismissed at the first hearing. Mr. McCarthy was very aggressive and did not take any crap from the prosecutor. I was glad to have him on my side and will recommend him to anyone I know that needs legal help. I only wish I could give him tens. Thanks, August!

Very pleased with his work. A little pricey ($300 per hour), but worth it in the end. Really seemed to know divorce law better than the other lawyer. Good result.

First I had Tom Hennessy; then August McCarthy. They took $5,000 and were supposed to litigate my case. Now a Karen Leiser writes me (less than a week after the final $1,000 payment) that they made a mistake initially and the case has no merits and they are withdrawing their services, of course keeping the money. I read another posting on this site months ago (I can't find it anymore) about this law firm and how horrible they are but I had already paid $2,000 so decided to keep my fingers crossed. STAY AWAY! I typed in all my own letters and they did not even have the decency to review them before sending them out but charged me at $275 per hour. They even charge you 25 cents per copy of any paperwork they copy for the client. The charge for talking 5 minutes on the phone or reading your email. You have been warned. I am hoping to find someone who can kick their butts. BE AWARE.
