Save your money!! I spent over $1500 for absolutely nothing. Told me to go to seek therapy as I was stressed dealing with a stonewalling narcissist ex rather than dealing with the what was causing me the stress!

Poorly prepared at court and the wrong documents submitted, he ended up being chastised by the judge. It seemed his legal staff did the actual work and he befuddled his way through it. Not the person I would choose if you hope to settle your divorce and get on with your life.

Unknowledgable and VERY SLOW - a snail is faster moving than James. Loves taking your money and does the very bare minimum. Save your money and hire someone else. It's probably time to retire, James.

Retained him in Dec 2016 to represent me for Divorce. In May 2017 I moved to Toronto. When I was going to file for Divorce in Jan 2019, he informed me then that he could not as I moved to Toronto (and he was aware). He charged me thousands of dollars and could ultimately not provide me resolution and I had to restart process in Toronto.

Provided incorrect advice on a marriage contract which caused disagreements in a relationship. Argued with the client to try to force his own opinion on how joint assets should be treated to minimize his own work and for simplicity. Accomplished nothing and billed for work anyway.

Mr. Whyte is a dedicated lawyer. He was very frank and realistic from beginning and represented me extremely well. I highly recommend him.

Of all the lawyers in Ottawa, I had to pick James Whyte. He is quick to ask for more money. Always asking the same questions over and over. Did nothing for me. Had to change lawyers start back at square 1. Unbelievable all that money wasted. Hope you read reviews before and not after like I did.

Save your money and look elsewhere for true representation. He likes to have the cash meter running. Talk is big, but come the time of representing you has no backbone, goes the easy route out. Leaves you hanging as to why you even bothered. The system is a farce don't waste your time. The judges and lawyers know each other and have their own agendas prepared ahead. I's all about how they can maximize their own wallets on the pretence of justice & fairness. Whyte provided little guidance. I did the homework. He asked the same questions numerous times, obviously did not look at the files. Did little as far as providing good advise, pointers and maximizing the case on facts. No representation. Leaves you hanging. You wonder who he is representing. Quick on the mark in asking for payments. Watch that and question hours. Value not worth the bus ticket to the office.

Handled my daughter's divorce case which we funded. Very timid on procedures, allowed case to become stagnent, missed court requests on required documents, did not argue ex's submissions, etc. Never missed a billing however.

It took over a year to get James Whyte to do anything with my case, including set foot in a courtroom, though the bills kept coming. On several instances I was called in to sign papers, but turned out they had already been signed previously, on another occasion, I had to re-explain the case to him! The day we went to court, he included additional items on the court document and had my ex sign it. The judge agreed to all the items, but told Mr Whyte to take the document to the court clerk across the hall to have it typed up. When I received his next bill, I claimed I hadn't received any court papers, and that we were way over the total amount he told me it would cost. When I finally received the court papers, none of those items agreed upon in court were included and he claimed he had no record of them, though they were originally written right onto the court document! So I was unable to have my ex pay 1/2 of my childcare expenses, or anything else we agreed upon.

NO DRIVE WHATSOEVER to win cases, I pretty much won my case on my own. Very good at billing you though (rate 5) he loves to get paid. Too passive as a lawyer. Will not recommend at all.

The didn't have knowledge about the case-law, even though he said he did when I hired him. He delayed procedures, backed down constantly. I never realized how bad he was until I got a new lawyer. If I had signed what he wanted me to sign, I would have lose thousands of dollars. He's way over priced and he over charged me numerous times. He's just a really bad lawyer. Not worth your money.
