I retained Azran & Associés for a divorce matter with a $5,000 retainer. Before we even reached a hearing, I received invoices totaling over $44,000, and billing continued far beyond the retainer. During this time, we informed the firm that we were experiencing financial difficulties, but the billing still continued at the same pace.
When the fees became unexpectedly high, we asked multiple times to receive copies of our previous invoices and documents so we could review the work and understand how the costs were increasing. Those requests were not fulfilled at that time, which made it impossible for us to evaluate whether it was reasonable to continue the mandate.
Communication and transparency are extremely important in legal representation, especially with vulnerable clients in a family law situation. Based on my experience, I did not feel well-supported or clearly informed, and I felt financially overwhelmed before any court hearing took place.
