I have to completely agree with the rating from 2/8/18. I could go on and on about how knowledgeable and prepared he is for every situation. However, I'll relate a story that best describes his experience and gravitas. Unfortunately, my case went to trial, due to the other side not willing to settle. When we walked into that court house all conversations stopped and several lawyers took the time to say hi and reach out to Gary. That was all I needed to know that I was in good hands. He is an excellent lawyer with an extensive grasp of family law. He will negotiate on the basis of what is set down in Case Law and is confident in the court room. As for the negative reviews on this site, I can only say that you don't always get what you think you deserve in Family Court. However, you can't use that to impugn Gary. The man is a credit to his profession.

Gary Blaney is the worst lawyer you can find in Ottawa. He represented me for my divorce for which he charged me $130,000. He deliberately made mistakes, which cost me tens of thousands of dollars. Hiring him was my biggest mistake related to my divorce.

The first two reviews reflect my experience much more accurately than the one positive review. My advice would be to give Mr. Blaney a wide berth and look elsewhere.

I was very surprised to read such negative reviews about Mr. Blaney, as I had quite a different experience than what was mentioned here. He was highly recommended by a colleague. My case was extremely complex - I needed to rely on the knowledge, expertise, and experience that Mr. Blaney clearly has. He was always very prompt in responding to phone calls and emails. When there were issues / questions he could not answer directly, he always sought out experts to opine. Mr. Blaney was ALWAYS prepared (if not over prepared) for court, mediation and deposition - he knew the intricacies of my case better than I did! (He certainly made the opposition appear less than prepared and knowledgeable.) He showed compassion and reassured me that all would be okay in the end. It took 18 months to settle my case and I could not be more pleased with the end result. I finally have closure and I believe I am in a far better position than I would have been had I not had Mr. Blaney in my corner.

he'll mess up your family and take your money gladly. That's the practice he's trained at. he's not worth it. he falsifies documents that are not based on facts. he lives in his own head and hands in his own pockets.

Mr. Blaney has a great reputation in Ottawa and I don't doubt that he was very good for most of his career, but I think it's time for him to retire. The day before we were scheduled for trial, I realized that Mr. Blaney did not have a full grasp of my case and was not ready to go to trial. Nothing was set up. No witnesses, no strategy, nothing. Instead, he pressured me to settle and gave away the farm. Afterwards, I sought a second advice and found out that he had indeed forced me to settle for way more than I should have - and this from the lawyer who had recommended him in the first place. A friend of mine also used him and had the same experience. He talks tough when you first meet him, then he is unreachable, doesn't respond to emails and doesn't have time to meet with you until the last minute. My friend also realized the day before the Case Conference that Mr. Blaney did not have a full grasp of his case and was not ready for the conference. It didn't go well for my friend
