I cannot recommend this attorney. I have paid her $25,000.00 to date. She advised me that the house was 100% mine, I assumed an existing mortgage before marriage. She chastised me for discussing a settlement with my spouse regarding the house. She also advised that my former spouse's marital infidelity did not matter according to VA law. Approx. Eight months later she sent me an email before meeting that she was wrong. I was convinced by her to sign an unfair agreement that cost me tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in excess of what I believe a judge would have awarded my former spouse. When I opined that the settlement was unfair, her reply was, "I got what I wanted". Mary Commander's office then botched/failed to file the orders for two retirement accounts, for approximately $20,000 and continues to bill me for her paralegals "attempts" to obtain the QDRO information that should have been obtained prior to the divorce being finalized by the Court.

Mary Commander helped assist me in a divorce. She not only gave me the best advice she helped make sure my dangerous ex husband didn't take my little girl to California for Christmas. My ex husband numerous times asked me why I hired the toughest lawyer to go against him. Mary's staff always answered my calls and emails within a day at the longest. I always knew what was going on!!! Thank you for help during the scariest time.

she got me serious alimony in a very difficult divorce case that went to trial. My ex is self employed and worked out of state for the last 15 years. Lawyers don't come any better!

Ms. Commander represented me in my very messy and complicated divorce matter. She devoted a lot of time and attention to my case and I definitely made out better than my husband. Ms. Commander is very knowledgeable in the family law area and the local court procedures. Her staff was also very helpful and professional. I generally felt very well taken care of by Ms. Commander and her office and have had a number of my friends use her for similar matters.

Mrs. Commander knows a lot, I'll give her that, so she's probably good to have that free consultation with. However, it was abundantly clear that she didn't want to be bothered much after I paid the retainer. Without the benefit of walking into her office, her communication efforts are abysmal. She spent so much time telling me what she wouldn’t do, wouldn’t present in court, and what questions she wouldn’t answer; which seemed directly contrary to me asking what “could” be done
She did seem to know what to expect when we went to court, but to a fault. I questioned a few things only to have her blow over my concerns as “nothing to worry about”.
I’d say Mrs. Commander’s ability as a lawyer is mediocre at best (value=2), and that people should seek out a more competent one. To this day I don’t believe I did anything out of the ordinary to deserve such blatant disregard and disrespect from her. Mrs. Commander has been one of the worst lawyers I’ve ever experienced. Steer clear.

I used Mrs. Commander in an adoption case that had some touchy issues. It involved two states and birthparents with issues. It was handled with the high level of sensitivity and expertise that was required. Everything went like clock-work, to the amazement of many. We are a happy family now! Thanks!!

She may have a great knowledge in law but her arrogance, rudeness, insentitivity ruins that part of her. She definitly needs to work on her people skills. I went to her for help in my case and for some reason she seemed to be peturbed from the moment we met. Her handshake was weak and some of her comments were insulting to me. She called my past lawyer who passed away stupid. She only read the opinion of the full commisssion after my appeal and didnt ask any questions about what happened and didnt even look at any other evidence to support my claim to possibly appeal to the court of appeals. She became upset about the death of her father tossed down the clipboard on the table infront of me, said have a nice day and stormed out of the room, went into another office and slammed the door. She left us just sitting at the table. I am very sorry about the pain of losing her father, but her actions were very unprofessional despite all the awards.

Divorces are very difficult, especially with children involved. Staff and attorney were were compassionate. Considerate of what I was going through. Recommended a therapist which was a great help.
