An Alford plea got me out of an unholy mess years ago. I wanted trial, but after 3-plus years waiting, in jail, and possibility of mistrial (meaning automatic retrial and more wait - time in jail) At to Gates and I felt this was right best decision. The down-side: although no allocution required (I say I'm innocent) the federal government came next. Was not warned by my atty. Most federal cases are pled out; consequences of trial are increased charges and punishment. I guess you could call the system coercive. So I had ANOTHER conviction to deal with, though it was clear it was crap. Atty Gates helped my newbie federal defender--pro bono--and I considered myself lucky. Today, however,I wonder if the Alford Plea was a wise choice considering major collateral damage to life and stigma that immediately attaches to ex offenders. If Atty Gates represents you, 1) ASK QUESTIONS! 2) Have atty present at ALL court appearances. Atty Gates was not there for sentencing, and I felt shorted.
