Barb provided an exceptional service. Barb was straight forward, clear, professional and was able to very quickly understand our 'needs'. She did not try to insert conflict where none existed but was still able to advocate effectively on my behalf. I guess a divorce lawyer is a lot like a police officer or a proctologist. You know they exist, but you hope you don’t ever have to deal with one. I found myself going through a divorce with a partner, who like me, did not want to drag anything into a court setting. After looking at options, we decided on Collaborative Family Law (CFL). Barb’s expertise in CFL is well known in Ottawa and after meeting with her, I was convinced that this was the route I wanted to take and the lawyer I wanted to guide me through the process. It took three years from consultation to a finalized divorce. Most of those delays were on my wife’s side as she changed lawyers a few times. This is my first divorce so I was new to the whole system. Barb and Amanda would just keep me focused on what we could accomplish. If you do your homework and decide that CFL is that way you would like to go, I do not hesitate to recommend Barb and her team. Meet with her and see if it is a fit. I did and I was in good hands.

Barb and her team provided exceptional, professional, timely service during the negotiation of my separation agreement. Throughout the process Barb provided valuable, knowledgeable advice, clearly demonstrating her deep understanding of the law, years of experience, and sensitivity to the issues involved. I would highly recommend her to anyone needing assistance with a separation. She was certainly head and shoulders above the other lawyer and mediator that I dealt with during this process. My only regret is that my ex-spouse and I didn't engage her from the outset as a mediator for the agreement, as I suspect that would have expedited the process, while ensuring that both parties felt heard, respected and well-served.

I retained Barbara for help with finalizing a settlement agreement before, during and after working with a mediator. Barb is knowledgeable, reasonable, and effective. At no time did I feel like she was trying to prolong the process. Her advice was practical and took my circumstances into consideration. She even knew what issues my ex's counsel would likely raise. I felt very safe and secure that she was looking after my best interests. Her staff is great too, always available to answer questions and efficient. I am pleased with their services and how my matter was resolved.

After my wife handed me separation papers, I needed a lawyer and was referred to Barbara by a cousin.
I found working with Barbara a very easy and warm experience. She has many years of experience and a deep knowledge in family law, so she listens to you, understands your hurt/worries/anger, takes meticulous notes, then gives advice based on her honest assessment of the circumstances. And she does so in a caring and non-judgmental way. Her mindset is toward mediation and resolving issues, and she has the wisdom to do this well - if you want to punish your spouse or you're eager to litigate, I don't think Barbara is for you. And she makes time for your calls and/or meeting requests (this was in stark contrast to my wife's lawyer who literally took days to respond to any questions or doc edits).
I would whole-heartedly recommend her to anyone going through a marriage breakup.

I had a relatively straightforward case but it was made complex by the other side, who tried every trick in the book to delay the case or get an unfair advantage. Barbara handled my case professionally and steered it to a more-than-satisfactory completion. She was always on the lookout for expediting the case and reducing costs, and represented me very nicely. She is open to various financial arrangements to ease the burden of legal costs. Overall, I am very happy with Barbara and how my case concluded.

I went for consultation with her to get some advice. She spent two hours with me taking notes and provided very little advice. She only made a few general comments that I knew already, but gave no advice for my specific case. It was complete waste of almost $700 of hard-earned money.

My previous lawyer intentionally dragged out my case for four years, so when I finally discovered Barb I was emotionally and financially drained and a bit broken inside. Barb took me under her wing, made me feel safe and taken care of, and then expertly negotiated a settlement in mediation within 3 hours. She accomplished more in one month of working with her than my previous lawyer accomplished over four years AND at a FRACTION of the cost. Barb is worth every single penny. Her team is fantastic. Barb and her team were unbelievable helping navigate my separation. Barb was always available for any questions I had as were her team. I didn't feel like a client. Barb made me feel like I was special and that she was there for me and was going to make sure I got the best possible settlement despite the situation. Emotionally it was a very tough time for so to have a lawyer that I could trust implicitly and one that had my best interest at heart, meant the world to me. When facilitating the government pension benefit from my spouse, Barb showed me just how knowledgeable she is. I was extremely happy with the service Barbara provided!!! She was my second lawyer in a contentious and stressful divorce case. She was very knowledgeable and willing to research any other relevant issues specific to my case. She was thorough but did not waste time and money pursuing dead ends or billing time for non-productive outcomes. She is a straight shooter and also a very reasonable person. Through interactions with both the opposing lawyer and the judge, it is obvious that she is very well respected in the legal community. Opposing counsel knew he could not mess with her :-). I felt I was in the best possible hands and completely trust her (very important!). When I first hired her, I needed her to come up to speed very quickly for an upcoming court case. We started a family court file with another lawyer and after much frustration, stress and uncertainty, we eventually discovered Barbara and her team. We could not be more grateful and fortunate. Barbara and her team engaged themselves from the start, explained everything and made sense of issues whether they were in our favour or not. The last thing we wanted was for a lawyer to tell us what we wanted to hear and fill us with false hope just to string us along for fees. Barbara's knowledge and ambition for solutions cannot be quantified by words. Finding the right lawyer to represent you is the most important decision you can make. My own experience is a true testament to how having the right lawyer and (equally important) excellent assistants, can make all of the difference in the world. At an 11 hour, I was given the opportunity to seek Ms. Cohen's opinion and direction on several key elements addressed in three divorce conferences that I had attended. She provided great guidance and suggestions following her preliminary review of my file.It is unfortunate that I had only just met her as she was clearly experienced and passionate about seeking justice particularly when there was clear evidence that there had been a misrepresentation of the marital situation and spousal responsibilities. Although our interaction was limited, she and her office went out of their way to assist me and send supporting information to me. I highly recommend Barbara Cohen. Please note that having had only one meeting has impacted the rating of last two elements above -having see what I had seen in 1.5 hours, they would likely be higher if more deliverables.

As a tradesman never having legal dealings other than real estate I was not very accepting of the path that was required to obtain separation, divorce and more importantly custodial issues regarding my kids. Just ordering a part or using a bigger hammer was not an option for me. Ms. Cohen recognized my frustration very quickly and patiently guided me through a very frustrating system without charging me for training or my nonacceptance of the eventual realities of the action. As I was told some actions did not result in the outcome i thought. I would trust Barbara with my life at this point she got me through the worst part of my life, I will never forget it or take it for granted. There is more than money and "stuff" to a divorce to some of us.

A mediator Colleen Curry introduced me to Barbara Cohen in the hall of their offices. Barbara asked to speak to me in private in her office, not knowing that she was billing me for a 35 min conversation in her attempts to hire her as my lawyer. 2 months later, I get a bill for$600.00!!!! I am fighting this as we speak. I don't know if that office is in co hoots with each other , or if it;s just Barbara Cohen that is a crook. BUYER BEWARE!!! Who would have thought in a time of your life when you are most vulnerable , you would be scammed by who you thought was a professional. A professional scammer no doubt!!!
