Average retainer for an attorney in this area for his same level experience is 1,500-3,000. (I now work with a legal company). He charged me 3,500 and an outstanding fee after three years of not proactively working my custody matter. There was no divorce; thus, no petty property arguments to consider. I lived out of state and asked that he give me at least 2 weeks notice when he learned I would need to be in court again. He called me three days before my court hearing which doubled the amount of my air fare and led to a reschedule because he and the guardian were not ready to proceed. I had to convince my son’s father to settle out of court and did all of the investigative work on my own. He allows his personal life get in the way of his job and I feel that if he did not have the time to progress my case, he should have returned part of my retainer so I could hire a new attorney.
