Mr. Smith collects the upfront money by convincing the client of his "current" clients of similar cases and has you talked to one of them. I believe they are made believe clients. Later he collects more money and tells you things are looking good, when the case gets close to trial, he discourages the client from proceeding saying the case looks weak and doubts the judge will side with "you".
