A friend had an experience with her as a DRO (Dispute Resolution Officer) for Child Support, and I was thoroughly shocked by the consummate lack of professionalism. I understand these conversations get heated, however Ms. Shibley’s behavior struck me as unforgivably unscrupulous and antithetical to dispute resolution. Including…
- failure to provide parties with accurate documents prior to the call
- misrepresentation and ignorance of Alberta family law
- rude and uncooperative tone
- haphazard quoting of arbitrary rather than exact figures
- obstructing meaningful resolution attempts with repeated mentions of “Are we done yet?”
- evasion of relevant points of Albert family law brought up with “Moving along…”
A complete disgrace to Canadian law. The “resolutions” were as much a sham as Ms. Shibley herself.

Valerie handled my Divorce and I was very pleased with how quickly it was finished and especially how easily it was to negotiate a property settlement.

In my opinion, If you need a lawyer who's rarely available, does very little work (no resolve or forward movement with my case), has poor communication skills (wouldn't answer questions about methods or progress), use Val. She could possibly be somewhat adequate with low hanging fruit situations.

Our real estate deal was very stressful (due the the people buying our home). Not her problem but when you are dealing with people who are in frustrating situation a little bit of compassion or understanding and people skills goes a long way. We did not understand something and had been playing telephone tag with her office. She just left a message summarizing everything quite clearly which was wonderful however she did not need to add at the end of the voicemail "and this is the last time I will be discussing this." People skills could be improved.

We have used Val on a handful of real estate deals. She works hard, very knowledgeable in her areas of expertise, and has reasonable pricing.

I've been working with Val over 25 years. Always on time, accurate and well versed in areas where needed. I have found that she speaks straight to the heart of the matter and does not pull her punches. She says it like it is. When I am wrong or without sufficient grounds she tells me to leave well enough alone. I very much appreciate that Val continues to work on my behalf.

Worst Lawyer Ever. I'm on disability. Legal aid gave me her. Not only was she rude, but I was being threatened by my ex husband to sign papers he was blackmailing me with on the pretence if I did not sign what him and his lawyer came up with, he was moving back to Ontario and I would not see a penny for child support. My daughter and I were homeless and in shelters for 4 month fleeing from abuse. I finally told her he was blackmailing me to sign. Praying she would help. She looked at me and said hmmmm sign here. I am now sitting in Calgary Housing in poverty with 2 children and lost my half of everything. The papers were lies right down to his income. Please do not trust her. You will lose everything. Found out after I had her, of a male friend complaining she was trying to make him not split with his ex fairly either. He wasted his money on her and fired her and now is pursuing a new lawyer. Sad part is he was complaining of his lawyer and I said it is not Valerie Shibley is it?

AVOID USING VALERIE SHIBLEY AT ALL COSTS!! Recently used for realestate purchase. Unprofessional, beligerent, rude and condascending! No respect for myself, my realtor, or my bank. Documents delayed & incomplete. Valerie does not seem to care to do her job only to berate those who pay her. Her fees are very high and there is no service to substantiate. Still waiting for documents to this day. Have overpaid her and still no reply. Not sure how this lawyer still has a license. A disgrace to the law society. Do your homework when looking for a lawyer; do not make my mistake. This lawyer should NOT be practicing.

I retained Valerie to assist me in a very difficult dicorve and not only did she resolve everything quickly her fees were very reasonable. She was also able to do the real estate transaction to finalize the settlement and do my will.

We had used her in 2000 and she was very good. We as really happy with her work, so we thought we would use her again. We found that she was rude to us,unreliable,slow, hung up on my realtor when she tried to help her with information. We found her lazy and we had to track information down on our own. Then her prices was really expensive for what we got. It has been one month since we used her services and we are still waiting for papers, that should have been completed. we have paid her up to date and still waiting for her to complete work.

I hired Valerie as I had a very difficult divorce and property matters to deal with. She achieved great results and did everything in a timely manner. I also appreciated her calm approach too. I would highly recommend her.

I wish I had found this site before hiring Val as my lawyer. She is flippant and rude. I'm pulling the pin on her. Documents sent to the wrong lawyer. No communications sent to me for review and approval before going to my "soon to be" exhusband's lawyer. When I question calculations she attacks me and makes me feel like an idiot. She has side discussions with the opposing lawyer...tells me but won't devuldge the context. Leaves me feeling like the support is two fold for the other team. If possible, I'd give her an overall ZERO rating and a plea to all that find this site. Do yourself a HUGE favor and DO NOT use this lawyer. No heart - No sense - Terrible - !!!!

Valerie is a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE lawyer! She made my child custody case harder than it was and completly sided with the other party! She does NOT care about a childs best intrest and completly made my life a living hell! I DO NOT recommend her to many one! She gave me the wrong date for court and went behind my back just to mess me up! Everything she did was illegal and unhuman, VERY evil and i couldn't even believe she did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING right for me! Anything i wanted, she did the opposite! Stay as far away from her as possible!! Even though she talks calm, she is rude and FAKE in every way!I would give her a 0 instead of a 1 for this rating!

An acquaintance recommended this lawyer. I contacted Val to interview her to see if she is the type of lawyer that I wanted to hire for my divorce. She was not only adversarial on the phone but she was also rude and had such attitude in her tone. I only asked her four questions and her response was a question to me. These weren't tough questions. I could no longer handle the tone she used, nor the condesending attitude and told her so prior to hanging up on her. She was very unprofessional on the phone. It would be a big mistake to ever hire this lawyer.

While going through a very painful separation you depend on your lawyer to offer you guidance on your rights and entitlements. Valerie Shibley did none of this. Do NOT use this lawyer.

Did not review background material and some of the other party's evidence prior to court and could not answer judge's questions. Made poor attempts at guessing the requested information and irriated the judge. Did not communicate additional filings by other party or temporary decisions by court - I had to get them from the other party! When I finally got through by phone, downplayed the temporary order and said it was not relevant to the hearing. That turned out to be procedurally wrong. I found additional material submitted by other party after the hearing, which I never received but could have refuted easily. Decided we didn't need to file any additional evidence despite my suggestions to provide evidence in my defence and when critisized about poor preparation responded the judge didn't believe any of the evidence that I provided. Made minimal effort and then held back filed documents to make sure she gets paid. Highly unprofessional behaviour.
