12/13/19   5     5     5     5     5   This review is long overdue. My ex had a lot of time on his hands and handled his own case. He filed all kinds of motions to pull me back to court time and time again. It took a while but attorney Michelsen helped me keep my cool and eventually shut him down and forced him to back pay his child support RID: 216912
Click to report rating    7/5/19   5     5     5     5     5   I worked with attorney Michelson at Coates & Frey. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a good family law attorney. He clearly laid out my options so we could decide on the right path. He then efficiently and expeditiously work through my legal issues until resolved. And I also appreciated his communication style - straight and to the point. It was the best experience I ever had working with an attorney. RID: 212618
Click to report rating    1/13/14   1     1     1     1     1   I do not recommended him. I lost everything because of him. He charged me too much and it is too expensive. He did not finish the work that I wanted him to do. RID: 130250
Click to report rating    8/29/13   5     5     5     5     5   I cannot recommend this lawyer more highly. At a critical time, he acted as a buffer and an advocate on my behalf and forced, with his communication skills, an extremely vitriolic defendant, to behave like a gentleman. His knowledge and professionalism are exceptional. He met every timeline and commitment that he made to me. His office staff is attentive and cordial. The process was explained to me step-by-step in a reasonable and informative way. Expensive? Whatever happened to "you get what you pay for?" RID: 122372
Click to report rating    7/31/13   1     1     1     1     1   Does not keep appointments. Works for one of the biggest ripp of Law firms in Honolulu. Simple advice, consumer beware of all the sharks out there. Coates and Frey are in the business of taking advantage of people during a very emotional time in their life. Want to get screwed and ripped off, you found the right attorneys. Good luck to all during a very difficult time. RID: 120225

Click to report rating    3/29/11   1     2     4     1     1   I was on the other side of the case, i.e., he was my ex's lawyer. He seemed to be playing the pitbull role rather than trying to make it a "divorce with dignity" (the name of book that was ironically written by his company, Coates and Frey). He didn't seem to know Hawaii divorce law very well, perhaps because he spent to time time as a judge in Timbuktu (actually, Micronesia). He also let my ex file fradulent income statements that were hiding over $20,000 in income, something he should have seen if he had looked at them, and if he didn't look at them, why didn't he? Is it dishonesty or incompetance, or just trying to make the case longer and more profitable? He even tried to claim half of property I owned before the divorce, which is against state law.      12/30/10   1     1     1     1     1   Not well prepared, doesn't remember information provided, and does NOT make his points clear and assertive in court. Assumes too many things. I had to inform him multiple times on the same things. Not very methodical. During hearing he left you guessing what question would be next and didn't provide an actual outline of questions and answers. Questions asked in court were not all the items discussed in his office which were important to the case. He assumed too many things stating that the Judge knew this or that when in fact that was not the case. Maybe he knew the point that we were trying to make, but he did not convey the point well to others. He failed to make the points to the Judge because he failed to ask simple questions to the Defendant that would have proved our points. We lost the custody battle as a result and had to pay thousands of dollars. Terrible lawyer if you are a father fighting for custody. RID: 38979
