I wholeheartedly agree with the review from 2010. Paul is problematic in his inability to respond to simple questions without going into defensiveness and attack. And his attacks are significant. Time spent with him is very inefficient and unproductive. I found myself regularly finishing a meeting where nothing was accomplished because of the time consumed in addressing threats or complaints of one kind or another made by Paul. It seems nearly impossible to get him to hear even the simplest communication without this drama. I will also add that Paul is a 'settlement attorney' 1st, not a trial attorney 1st. His pattern of communication is 1. Announce he is acting in my best interest 2. Make up the worst case scenario to frighten me. 3. Advise me to compromise far below what the court would grant in trial, but at a place he knows he can easily negotiate in settlement. While Paul may indeed complete your divorce, I have to ask by what loss and method? Surely there has to be a better way.

Paul DeBast is knowledgeable and experienced. Unfortunately, he has a rather thin skin, a hair-trigger temper and is not a good listener. Clients who are shy or not skilled at argumentation may find him overbearing.
His office made no effort to contact me prior to an important court status review. When questioned, DeBast pointed out that he had sent me a letter (*over two months earlier!*) telling me to contact him two weeks prior to the court appearance. Although I did not question his competence or experience, he took my questions as an attack on his integrity and reacted by summarily terminating our relationship.
DeBast is rather slick in responding to questions about likely outcomes in the areas of spousal support and division of assets. Instead of direct responses, he hands out printed summaries of many “typical” divorces.
If you need a lawyer who will guide you carefully through the divorce process, you may wish to look elsewhere.
