Derek was awful to work with. In my divorce consultation we appeared to be on the same page. However, as soon as the retainer was paid, things changed. He never returned my emails and phone calls, but would send the bill on time every time. He charged me $3000 to write a settlement offer that was largely copy and paste from another client’s order (it still contained their addresses in it!!). He pushed me to settle when it was clearly the wrong decision and he didn’t listen to my concerns. On top of everything, when my ex sent a letter saying she wanted 4000 in retro child support. Derek corrected her math and told her I owe her closer to 5200. He spent more time making sure my ex got all the $$ she wanted then he did defending my position. He showed up for 1 court date, was in court 20 min, and billed me $7000. After more then 10 grand spent on him, I cut my losses and moved on to someone else. DON’T MAKE MY MISTAKE.

High priced and low value. He does not like to communicate but makes sure his bill is up to date on all the "work" he supposedly has done, even when there are no results to show for that "work". Keep looking for a better lawyer as finding someone better than this lazy guy isn't hard to find.

Worked as Dereck's paralegal for several years and you could not ask for a better family lawyer. Dereck is smart, experienced, a great advocate and strategist, as well as being down to earth, kind and funny. The only thing he can't do is change the personality of your ex or what type of lawyer he/she may have hired or cranky irritable justices sitting at QB

Dereck is very knowledgeable, thorough and prepared. He was a great asset to me throughout. I could not have gotten through this without him and certainly not with the results I got!

Dereck is probably the best in Calgary – and sadly I’ve had to work with a number of family lawyers. Dereck has been nothing but professional, knowledgeable and supportive. He knows the law, he is not afraid to ‘fight the good fight’ but knows what hills to die on. He can very closely predict what the courts will do and is usually right (sadly I know this as my ex will take even the most inane matters to court) and Dereck always wins. Having appeared before countless judges, it seems quite apparent to me that Dereck is very well respected by the courts.
He can be a little hard to get ahold of but when you need him, he will always be there ‘on file’, prepared and ready to go. I am into year 6 of a ridiculous family law debacle due to my ex-wife’s intransigence and mental health issues, but Dereck has yet to steer me wrong.

WORST lawyer ever!! When I hired Dereck Jones to represent me during my divorce, I was incapacitated & full of grief. He exploited my weakened mental state, and threw me under the bus, with no interest in attaining a fair settlement for me. It’s been a few years and I’ve recovered emotionally, but I continue to suffer financially from my poor decision of trusting Dereck Jones to look after my divorce. I don’t understand … why would he treat a client with such contempt? There is nothing I can do to recoup the funds that were lost to me, that I was entitled to, but I hope I can save others. Protect your future, and stay away from him.

Dereck would always let too much time pass between our meetings and actually doing something about my case resulting in much more bad behaviour by my ex in the meantime and therefore more legal help needed, and on and on until i had paid nearly $10K in legal fees to him. I now feel this was intentional to make more $$. I was a broke single mother at that point and in desperation went to legal aid where I was told I did qualify, but in order to remain using Dereck Jones (for continuity) he would have to pay back all of the fees I had already paid and give them to legal aid. Of course he didn't like that idea and decided to do the rest pro-bono. Funny thing is that he finally got stuff done and my case was wrapped up about 2 weeks later. He is more of a settler than someone who has your best interests in mind. I do not recommend for anyone.

I was pushed into an extremely nasty situation by a drug addled ex-wife who was getting really bad advice from many people. Due to my wife changing tactics and lawyers many times, I became too familiar with family law and many family lawyers. Out of the 10 + family law lawyers I dealt with Dereck was the best. I dealt with many that are very highly ratedby the public and who were more expensive. Dereck was the best. He gave very good advice up front which I followed. He added a lot of value in being far ahead on many topics, including employment research. When he spoke the judges listened. Beacause of Dereck's advice and excellent work on my file, we won, if that can be said of a divorce file. Meet with Dereck and see if he is right for you. I am so glad I did.

Any time you can have a lawyer guide you through the very challenging legal process and feel like you are making positive steps it is a good thing. Dereck has helped guide me through a very challenging and trying time during the access struggle I have had with my ex. Dereck has a very solid approach to tackling these very trying and emotional issues. He preaches and practices ethics from a laywers perspective and also from a clients perspective. I have nothing but positives to say about his court appearances. He is quick on his feet, always prepared and never ever gets flustered. Think of Dereck as a well dressed and better spoken Columbo.

Dereck Jones has been my lawyer since 2005. He guided me through a very difficult divorce with knowledge and compassion. He was tough when he needed to be and always gave me an honest evaluation of where I stood. Each year he continues to assist with child support adjustments and I have been very happy with his efforts.

Dereck has been he best lawyer I have had. He is pragmatic, will provide you with the best long term approach to any solution. Dereck and I have workign together for almost 4 years and although I may not always like what I hear, we have never lost an application for increase access. Dereck is able to present a very well thought out case, one in which provides the justices with the relevant facts. Dereck's expectation of me as his client is one of being above reproach. This just speaks to the fact that Dereck is all about doing things ethically and correctly. The same can not be said for some lawyers I have dealt with.

Dereck and I may not have always agreed, but he listened to me and we always managed to find a solution (most often it was that Dereck explained his position and reasons - and was always right!). Divorce is a terrible thing, access agreements are a frustrating process and, dare I say, Dereck (almost) made it enjoyable. He knew what was best, knew what to focus on and was always more than knowledgeable (always more so than opposing counsel). I would highly recommend Dereck, he may be a bit more expensive than others, but you get what you pay for and he is worth every penny.

Dereck Jones was very helpful in straightening out a very difficult time in my life with a result that made financial and structural sense. He does an excellent job of steering his clients away from things that may seem important but are not for things that appear to have little importance but will take on huge impact years down the road.

Dereck made one of the most difficult periods of my life bearable and at times nearly enjoyable. I always felt he had my back even when he had to course correct me through the process. It's easy for a lawyer to agree with their client but that doesn't always equate to an optimal long term result. He helped set up a great after divorce life for me and my family. I was very lucky to find Dereck and highly reccomend him. My wife went through 3 lawyers and a lot of money until she found someone that could do a good job for her.

This lawyer represented me in my divorce and settlement. He held meetings with my ex and his lawyer without my presence, withheld critical financial information from me, misled me with regard to the law, and intentionally undermined my case. He seems to have issues with spousal support.
