Kate Checkland is a lawyer who defends the underdog and generally won't quit until she animates her legal opposition according to my experience.I was pleased to hear she came out of retirement and was now using her over 30 years of legal practice to represent children and help people with chil protection cases. I also hear she has started representing other lawyers who are being attacked by others without foundation. Like I said she looks after the vulnerable and the underdog. She got nicknamed " the pitbull" because she won't let stuff slide and is fearless...5 star counsel!

I was lucky enough to get Ms. Checkland through legal aid about 4 years ago. I have always had a lot of respect for Ms. Checkland and she has always treated me with respect. Her and her assistant always made me feel welcome and accommodated my schedule as I did shift work.

I worked for Ms. Checkland for some time, and during my time in her office, I saw her treat every one of her clients with nothing but respect and dignity. Ms. Checkland is good at her job, and I will continue to refer clients to her as long as she continues to practice. Family law will never be an easy job. Keep up the Good work Kate!

Absolutely horrible. She is extremely rude and arrogant but can't back up all the talk. From day one has talked about money, how rich she is, and not caring if she gets disbarred since she'll quit next year anyway. Which leads to only recently declaring in court that she's shutting down in December and want to rush things. She has talked over me, NEVER admitted her own mistakes nor those of her assistant and reception, has refused to accept evidence, and completely scrambled information and misdirected questions as a result. From day one has talked about how little she makes with legal aid and made excuses and thrown me under the bus every time for misinformation from her and information I offered which she made out to be forgotten, never mentioned, or didn't think was important. Would not recommend her especially if your dealing with family matters.

Ms. Checkland is a great lawyer. I've had to change lawyers a couple of times and i'm now happy to say I have someone who will fight for me. Always returns calls and always treats me like I matter, which I didn't feel with the other lawyers I had.

Kate Checkland has years and years of experience in Family Law and It shows in the thoughtful advise you get and her confidence in representing you in court. I noticed some unhappy reviews but it doesn't make sense for this Lawyer. Kate is Great !!!

Always late at cases. Self centered and cares more about material things. Staff are extremely incompetent and even steal pens. Very arrogant and untrustworthy. If she is angry at you and knows she is being replaced, she will sabotage your case before she leaves. She blurts out confidential information to hinder your case. Never choose this egotistical, arrogant one.

Her support staff don't acknowledge their errors, they blame the client for mixed up appointment times, and Kate is often running late which means she rushes through your appointment. She is quick to remind you that her regular fee is 3.5x what Legal Aid is paying her. Cases drag on & on, with speak to after speak to... her defense is better than her offence.

This woman still takes clients through Legal Aid after 2 decades in the business because that is the only place she can get clients. She turned my case into an absolute GONG SHOW! She treated me like pure garbage as though she already knew all about me and whether or not I "deserved" proper representation. She did not listen to any of my concerns and talked over me ALOT. I fired her after she embarassed me in a depo by screaming at me to stop taking noted. She is a hysterical and high strung woman and I would NEVER recommend her to anyone! I even made a complaint to the Law Society in which she was forced to write a formal apology.

She was hired through legal aid and told me that they pay less than half of her regular cost so that is all the performance she would give me. It was horrible. She cared more about her fancy purse than her client. My case would have been lost if I had not hired a new lawyer because of her lack or attention. Why does she volunteer for legal aid if she is against helping people? Steer clear of this one. She is extremely self centered.

perhaps as a legal aid lawyer she shows a different attitude towards her clients. Being reminded that her hourly rate of $300 is not what legal aid is paying her, does not make up for the rather rough treatment by both her and her support staff. Her staff have no issues blaming the clients for a breakdowns in communication. Whether that be double booking clients, or passing on questions for Katherine which it seems they believe is beyond their scope of work. Went in with high hopes and good faith, came out feeling stung

Katherine was the best lawyer I had ever had which we went through a few on an 11 year family law issue. Over three provinces as well. She was a large part of putting closure on and being relentless that the ending was in my favor. I will always remember her as a huge factor in my life and my grandaughter's life. Money was never an issue with her as well nor was it spoke of during the duration of a year long relationship. I would recommend her without hesitation . Her beautifull fire red hair compliments her personality. LOL Her confidence and intelligence in the courtroom explodes , yet her respect and love for her job is apparent. She has integrity and compasion for the issue at hand and my respect for her is unparalelled . God Speed Katherine Take Care cause I care for sure! Warmly Alexina
