I contacted Mr. Markowitz after being laid off from a job that I had had for a long time. The thing that struck me right away was how responsive he was. He would usually answer my (email) questions within hours and some of those responses were quite detailed. I wasn't expecting that because a friend often talked about waiting a week or more for her lawyer to answer her questions.
While he mentioned fees in an early email, he answered all of my questions before asking for any money and he could have ended up not making anything. As it turned out, though, my ex-employer was being intransigent about one particular issue that was important to me and I ended up paying Markowitz a few thousand dollars to write a letter to them, followed by a few follow-up letters. While that may seem like a lot of money for a few letters, they were successful, so, from my perspective, the money was well spent and I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Markowitz to others needing an employment lawyer.

While I have never had Howard as my lawyer for an open case, I have contacted him a few times for employer related instances and he is always willing to give his insights and recommendations on next steps. This can't be said for others that I have contacted. Howard is an expert in the field and I wouldn't trust anyone else with a wrongful dismissal suit!

I contacted Howard to see if I had a constructive dismissal case, he explained that I did but it was probably a better option for me to file a small claims court lawsuit instead and provided additional information to help me do that. I like the fact that I was working with a partner & not just an employee. He was very knowledgeable about about my situation & very thorough in presenting my case. Any questions I had were quickly & completely answered. Several weeks after I had received my settlement, my former employer had not sent a letter of reference as agreed upon. Howard garnered me the best possible outcome for my case....even better than I'd hoped for! He is prompt with responding, and in fact answered some emails late at night, including Friday night. I would say without a doubt that Howard is one of the best employment lawyers in Ontario. Most lawyers I've seen or talked to only cares about imposing their high fees on you. Howard has a great heart and he gave me very expensive legal advise for free because he truly cares that justice prevails for the unjustly treated. He did this out of his good heart knowing that my case is not worth it for any lawyer to handle on a commercial basis. Very knowledgeable lawyers with a true passion for justice like Howard are rare. I can recommend him to anyone because he's simply one of a kind. He is a true definition of what a genuine lawyer should be. A genuine lawyer cares that justice prevails. Please avoid. Will enthrall you with deluge of initial communication citing case law after case law. Was charging $4000 upfront for each stage. Did not show any tenacity to fight for client afterwards. Went into mediation with zero preparation of client.

Mr. Markowitz responded to my inquiries right away with highly useful information and guidance.
In my experience in general, zero guidance is offered without cash on the barrelhead. This is unfortunate because it may cost several $400 consulting sessions to even find the right firm, and then the right firm for your financial situation.
Now this is not an encouragement to solicit free advice. Mr. Markowitz is aware that I will be working with him exclusively should I need to proceed further on my matter. I think it's a great way of establishing trust and a better way of selling. No one is in business for free but some are in business because they have a passion for it. I don't necessarily need to be seen as a person but when I see this kind of treatment it tells me that this is a person not just turning a procedural crank. I have intense passion for my job and respect others who do as well. Especially in cases where their dedication will have a large impact on my life.

I contacted Howard Markowitz recently to review a wrongful termination case. He did so and was very honest and forthcoming with respect to viable options. He could have taken the case with an interest on securing billable hours but rather he advised the benefit to be gained by hiring legal council was very minimal vs what was already being offered by the employer. After reviewing various case law, Howard's assessment was very accurate with respect to severance entitlement. Very satisfied with his insight, honesty, and concise manner of elaboration.

I think Markowitz decides if he likes your case he works for you, otherwise if you're a fool to pay him upfront (like me), he'll just take the money and do nothing. All the reviews of people having to dog him for a response or to do something were identical to my situation. Now I'm out thousands with nothing to show for it. Be careful when you hire him, sounds like he works for some people, and just scams others.

Not recommended. I believe Howard's positive ratings are based on those who paid him upfront. I decided to pay only once the case was over. Bad mistake. I never saw or heard from Howard again except for occasional one-line emails. The case dragged on for over six months and in the end I got less than half of what he promised. Definitely NOT recommended.

Worst experience of my life! Great salesman upfront but then disapeared. I believe he knows the law but perhaps has too much on his plate, and not enough staff. Would not answer phone calls or emails, and would have his assistant lie to you. Had to constantly chase him to get a response and some action. I pretty much had to handle the case myself. I would not recommend this lawyer at all!

I've hired other lawyers for business and family. When I needed one myself, they gave me Howard's name for the job. Howard was a straight-shooter, no sales pitch involved. He has a strong team behind him. They sat in our meetings, and put up with a lot of grief when my pay dried up (thanks Millie & Tiffany). Howard's more about the game plan, and I like that he settled without turning my file into $$$ trial of the century to get there. He did slow down when I fell short on his bill, but then carried the day by taking his fees paid at the end. I'd use them again.
