This judge is biased against women in family court. He does not listen to reason. His rulings are unfair. Unbelievable that he has been a judge for so long and not removed or reassigned out of family court.

Re: Two year old traveling from Maui to mainland every 45 days to give parents equal time. Clearly, this judge is ignorant of the best interests of a child of any age. How can we have judges making decisions about children's lives when they have no knowledge about child development.

In my divorce in 2009 Tanaka would not allow me to enter the court room because he wanted to hear my wife's case only. He told me to leave. Even though I spent my last dime to fly back to Maui for the divorce my Civil rights were immediately violated by Tanaka. He only heard my ex-wife's story and in 2 mins he came to a decision to rule totally in her favor. I lost a nationwide business (my only income I had built for 12 years to my ex, all my bank accounts 800K, all my Real Estate 2.5 million 3 Maui Wailea Properties I had to quit claim but I was told I had to pay the mortgages while my ex could collect the rents from vacationers and the business income. Needless to say I could not afford 15K in Mortgages a month and my ex ruined my credit from 780 to 420.All properties went to foreclosure and my business closed thanks to Tanaka. I was left homeless. I did get how ever an old 2004 BMW. Tanaka = a criminal. I was treated like a criminal? (he is sick/CORRUPT. My Exs ATTY is Japanese

Clearly Tanaka has connections in high places in order to be reassigned to the bench for another term. He is shameless and should not be in a position to ruin people's lives by virtue of his bias' and illegal rulings. Some have stated that he is just ignorant; however, after being turned over on appeal multiple times + seeing his mistakes come back to haunt him in normal hearings, it can only be concluded that he is making his "judgements" based on malice. He needs to be removed from the bench immediately.

Judge Tanaka took my daughter away from me and gave full custody to the father who has not been involved. He has not paid a penny of child support he's ordered to pay. I have been sole provider and caregiver to my child, leaving my career when she was born to raise her. He allowed father visitations that caused emotional trauma to my child as well as physical abuse done to her by father yet he claims father isn't at fault. After a period of the father disappearing he decides he wants custody of her and judge awards him full custody! No basis or evidence that should have ripped my child from the only person and family she's known and has! He didn't allow any evidence to be heard. In 20mins he managed to devistate our entire family! My daughter is in harm and I have no idea where is she going to be or if I will see her again. I am predjudiced against because I have no money and no representation. The court and especially this judge is unfair and should be removed immediately!

You expect fairness when you go to court, but this judge wouldn't even listen to an experts testimony and refused to understand the issue and 'legally' stole money from my daughter. A friend told me of another case where he awarded a free and clear property to one party and the mortgaged property to the other party, but no compensation so one lived debt free and the other had a big mortgage. Where is the fairness! I haven't heard from any men before his court, but it seems he favors the men from what I have heard. My daughter's lawyer went out shaking his head and saying this would not have happened on Oahu. Don't let this guy back in!!!

I have not been able to see or speak to my children for 7 years because of a guardian report I was unable to question because the guardian got sick and can no longer come to court.

Certainly green when he started, but he's settled in to a reasonably fair, reasonably knowledgeable family court judge. To replace judge Tanaka now would mean Maui's Family Court would have to start all over with a green judge - and THIS would be bad for Maui.

In my divorce dated January 2009, this judge awarded the property to my ex, ordered him to refinance within 60 days in order to have my name removed from mortgage. December 2010 I was made aware that my ex was 6 months behind in payments, and, had never refinanced like ordered to get my name off of the mortgage. After checking my credit, I learned that my score had already dropped. I was forced to retain a lawyer to have something done to get my name off of mortgage. After 9 months, 6 court hearings and property being finally sold, this judge says that he does not feel that I am deserving of any compensation for damages to my credit, that this situation was not anyone's intention and that this would be something for civil court. Then why did he not say that at the first hearing? And, he only awarded me half of my legal fees to boot. Now I know that court orders are a crock. Why have an order if there are no consequences for contempt.

Judge Tanaka is an asset to the family court bench. He is completely fair which often upsets the parties because they want all or nothing. Handling the divorce calendar is a thankless job and he still manages to treat both sides with respect. He is a hard worker, knows the law, makes the tough decisons and most importantly follows the law!

Judge Tanaka is a hazard. His record is getting caught up with him and he's being transferred to criminal court. This guy was brought in to do traffic and instead they put him in charge of people's children and lives in family court. Hawaii's COJC (Commission on Judicial Conduct) refuses to hold him accountable for his blatant violations of law, ethics and judicial canons. Tanaka gives children to their alleged abusers, as well as perpetrators of Domestic Violence. This judge is a danger to the community. He is careless and blind with power. In my case he told me in chambers that I was "definitely entitled to 167k" in back tuition from an educatonal trust for my son, that I could return to court to reinstate child support, and that my attorney was doing a "tremendous job". The fact is that my attorney, Gerald Johnson, also inept, wrote a motion on an expired decree instead of the stipulated trust. Instead of throwing it out and letting me return to court in the proper format... Tanaka ruled against me and my son, without having studied the case, and added that I can never return to court on any of the subjects. My son lost a parcel of land and an entire high school and college education. I was shocked that Judge Tanaka did not recognize that the statute had expired and was completely unfamiliar with the case. Some cases do go way back and are complicated but I expect a judge to be more meticulous. This judge ruled in a cavelier manner not

Judge Tanaka is a very bad judge. In my case he had not reviewed the material. He rendered a judgement hastily even though he could have waited because he said that the case was going so long and although he stated in chambers that I deserved what I was asking for however in the end he awarded me nothing. It was senseless and my attorney and I were shocked. The reasoning was that the statute of limitations was expired however the fact is that I had taken the party to court within the statute and won, they appealed and I won again. Tanaka consideration of the case was minimal. He clearly ruled in favor of my ex-husband and Wendy Hudson is the public defender and my ex-husband's wife. Tanaka worked in that office and clearly has a relationship with her. It would have been appropriate for him to have recused himself because of the connection. I understand from a friend who had the same experience with Tanaka. He rules consistently in favor of men and is unfair.
