I don't wish to comment very specifically as I do not want Joan to know who I am. She basically twisted my arm telling me trial would be the best option getting more spousal and child support but she charged me in the thousands and the agreement originally offered was better than the judges final decision. I believe I could have done better but Joan 'forgot' nessesary files the first day of trial! Infuriating and useless.

She makes accusations with zero proof. She refuses to communicate with self-reps. She is rude and unprofessional. She makes up her own figures instead of using actuals so anything she says doesn't make sense. She gets up and walks out of a 4way with no notice or reason, except that I had stopped her from answering a question that was directed specifically to me. She will drag your case out. She blames everyone else for not wanting to negotiate when in fact she ignores everyone. Stay away unless you want to be tied up for years and years. It's been 3 years and still NOTHING has been resolved. It's my kids that are suffering the price.

I am upset, as she lost my case. I feel this could have been avoided as she was so unprepared for court that she simply 'forgot' to bring some very essential documents to court. How does that happen?! Especially after what I paid her. Unfortunately I will have to return to court for an appeal with a new lawyer. Simply ridiculous.

I found Joan to be very caring and knowledgeable. Joan was professional and listened carefully as our goals/objectives were explained to her. As a result, we reached our goals/objectives just as promised. We couldn't have asked for more. I recommend Joan's services to anyone in need of family law assistance or representation.

Joan came highly recommended to me in dealing with my family matter, she was amazing and helped me through a very tough and stressful situation. My Court matter involved a whole other province and Joan arranged everything for me and was extremely timely and professional throughout! I would totally recommend her!

We have been working with Joan for since 2016. She has been an amazing supportive advocate as we navigate through the complex family court system. She has all the golden qualities of a great family lawyer, she demonstrates integrity in all she does; she is diligent and responds to phone calls and emails in a prompt manner; her stellar communication skills and her superior writing abilities set her apart from most lawyers we have had contact with. Joan is always patient and responds to our questions and concerns with objectivity. She as extensive knowledge about narcissism and Borderline personality disorders, she truly understands and is capable of discerning these behaviors when they are presented in a family law situation. She is a very dedicated lawyer. She is smart as a whip, funny and it is very refreshing to work with her.

I have witnessed unprofessionalism first hand from this lawyer. In person, she makes statements without proof and makes unwarranted demands. When questioned for the proof and she is unable to produce, she literally yells. It is undoubtedly the most unprofessional thing I have seen. Her correspondence is equally unprofessional. She operates in a world of empty threats and fails to seek a conclusion. If she can drag it on, she will. The part I fail to understand is at what point does her behaviour become unprofessional and unethical? Steer clear of this one.

I have hired Joan twice. The GOOD...She is very tough, she knows the law well, and will put up a HUGE fight for you. She will not back down until her client gets the most of what they deserve. The BAD... She lacks a bit on the organization side of things. If you are an organized person this will not be a problem. Have your own copies and work with her. She is a very kind person with a big heart. She has not held up my case at all (my ex has been the one dragging his feet because he doesn't want to pay) she has always advised me of different approaches and how much each option is going to cost before moving forward. I would recommend her to anyone. She is not at all out for cash, she is out to make sure that you and your children get what you deserve.

Worst Lawyer experience ever. After promising results that she did not achieve. Two years later sends me a huge bill for almost twice as much as she told the judge the court costs we be. She was rude, unprofessional, late and unprepared. I feel sorry for anybody who uses her services.

Promises everything you want to hear and delivers nothing. Confrontational , stubborn and accomplishes nothing but waisting away your money.Finally had to hire a real lawyer to finish and clean up the mess she caused. This is the person that gives all lawyers a bad name.

People are finally figuring out that you CANNOT hire this lawyer if you want a job well done. Part of the process in family law is the art of negotiation. This so called lawyer does not have the word negotiation in her vocabulary, thus costing her clients many thousands of dollars needlessly. DO NOT HIRE THIS PERSON.

I guess depending on personalities and individual cases you either gel with Joan or you don't. It is too bad that some people did not have a positive experience with her because I am very grateful that she was recommended to me. She is very busy and may not always be able to get back to you right away but she is very knowledgeable, strategic and has shown time and time again how much she is committed to my case and how much she cares about me and my children. Her personality is what gets things done in and out of the courtroom. I had another lawyer before her who did take me to the cleaners financially and who made no headway with my case - zero - and it cost me $32,000. I feel like Joan saved me. She has worked very hard on my case and not only made lots of headway with a very difficult ex, but she has also kept the costs way down for me. I am sorry that some people did not have as good of an experience but I would definitely recommend her!

I had a great experience. Very knowlegeable, compassionate, and great in the court room. Felt like she REALLY cared. Hope to not need a lawyer again, but would definitly use her if need be.

Ms. Cushon has trouble communicating inside and out of court and can't seem to string sentences together coherently or reach a point. Her tactic seems is to negotiate by intimidation and time pressure rather than aiming to reach a constructive settlement for all parties. She will tell a client what they want to hear to get their retainer, despite what clear facts dictate, or what the courts have already established in an ongoing case. Ms. Cushon makes what seem to be innocent procedural and communication errors which lend themselves to complicating the legal process and increasing everyone's costs, whether or not intentional. If you want your case to drag on much longer than it has to, and you can afford a good battle, she's a great choice. Thus 3 points for tenacity. But don't expect your settlement to be any better than what the facts and guidelines in the matter will dictate. Watch for outrageous demands and short notices on motions, followed by mysterious requests for dismissals.

I think the other reviewer on here is Joan herself. She has studied some law and is good at reading personalities to be able to suck people in. I went to see her for a free consultation and left a retainer with her. When I told her I wanted my retainer back and that I was going with another lawyer, she backcharged for the free consultation and then wrote a scathing review of our conversation - which she also charged for. I had her bill assessed through the court and got a chance to see her courtroom demeanor; she spoke in a shaky voice and spoke at great length without ever reaching a point or making a relevant argument. She fought tooth and nail for the $1000 retainer though - hence the tenacity rating. As a client, I had a thoroughly negative experience and received ZERO value from her. I am worse off for ever having met her. AVOID AT ALL COSTS (because she will cost you). Oh, and the assessment judge cut her bill in half.

I was referred to Joan C. and it was the best thing that ever happened to me or my case. She is professional, knowledgeable, fair and extremely fearless. She knows the law, she fights for you and she CARES!!! I owe her my sanity and not my life savings. She is the kind of lawyer you want on your side.
